BALTIMORE – Today, Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) joined MSNBC’s PoliticsNation with Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss racist comments made by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), President Joe Biden’s marijuana reform, and the introduction of Congressman Mfume’s National Council on African American History and Culture Act.
Congressman Mfume on Senator Tuberville’s Racist Comments
“His comments are about the most vicious, vile, repugnant, parochial, racist things that I’ve heard in a long, long time. This is how violence gets started against Black people… Black people have had it being the targets of crime. Every time there’s a reason something is wrong, we’re the ones that are responsible.”
Congressman Mfume on President Biden’s Marijuana Reform Announcement
“He, in my opinion, is doing the right thing at the right time…Decriminalizing it to…[make] sure that people have a chance to be able to apply for a job, be able to get employment, get an education, find themselves as a productive member of society again without being tainted by this curse of a sentence as a result of marijuana possession.”
Congressman Mfume on His Legislation, the National Council on African American History and Culture Act
“What we’re trying to push back against is this notion that critical race theory is taking over our schools and destroying our kids, and making some of them feel guilty…
This bill creates, within the National Endowment of the Humanities and Arts, an opportunity for us to create a twelve-member commission designed to study, and to report back on African American history and culture since the beginning of the nation. We think it’s the right thing to do, many teachers have applauded us on this, and Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland and myself have put forth that legislation.”
