WASHINGTON -- A few hours ago, I was sworn-in to the 117th Congress. This marks the 7th time I have taken the oath of office as a Member of the U.S House of Representatives, but this time is very different.
The virtual and socially distant nature of today's events is an indicator of just how much the coronavirus crisis has reshaped our lives.
Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, I am filled with resolve as I enter this new term. A resolve to get this virus under control once and for all. A resolve to advance measures to raise wages, lower the costs of healthcare, address crime and gun violence, create jobs, fight racial injustice, make quality education more accessible for all, protect the environment, and get businesses on a path to recovery.
My resolve is strengthened because in 17 days, Joe Biden will be sworn-in as our 46th President. Alongside him, Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman to serve as our Vice President. I am confident they will help provide national leadership and be the action-oriented partners in government needed to help Congress turn the tide on the coronavirus pandemic.
I, along with my Democratic colleagues, am committed to working with Republicans to meet the needs of this moment. That means putting politics aside so that we can protect our most vulnerable, provide needed support to Americans, and jumpstart our stalled economy.
While I took the oath of office today, I will always remember this is your seat. This is your office and I will take your stories with me every time I go to bat for you in the halls of Congress. Throughout this next term, I will continue to be accessible, accountable, and transparent about our work in Washington and in the District.
