BALTIMORE – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) and U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves announced a $22.9 million investment in Maryland to implement a new apprenticeship model that well help train local workers and connect them to employers providing good-paying jobs in the clean energy sector. This project will simultaneously help tackle the climate crisis by support the region’s growing offshore wind industry. This grant was made possible through the Good Jobs Challenge program created by American Rescue Plan, historic legislation Rep. Mfume helped craft and pass as a member of the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee.

Excerpt from Rep. Mfume’s Remarks as Delivered:
“Every young person that comes through high school matriculating is not going to necessarily go to college, is not necessarily going into the armed services, but do want very much to go into apprenticeships that will provide them with a skill in a certain amount of time and with the oversight and the training they need to be able to take care of their families.
At the end of the day, that's what this is really all about.”
The Maryland Works for Wind Project will partner leading employers and seven local unions to build a training model that meets the needs of employers and local communities. With a focus on formerly incarcerated individuals, veterans, young adults who are no longer in school or working and other populations, this project will train thousands of individuals to enter good-paying jobs in the industry.
