In a congressional hearing titled "The Urgent Need to Address the Gun Violence Epidemic," Congressman Kweisi Mfume spoke on gun violence today.
Gun violence victims from Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo testified alongside Mayor Eric Adams of New York City, the Buffalo Police Commissioner and various other experts on gun violence.
Congressman Mfume made the following statement during today's hearing.
Rep. Kweisi Mfume joins Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss about the urgency of Congress passing bills related to gun reform, and other challenges for President Biden ahead of the midterm election.

As a distinguished Black economist and activist, as well as the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate of economics at Yale University, Dr. Phyllis A. Wallace paved the way for women of color to enter the field of economics. Her endeavors were largely based on racial and gender discrimination within Fortune 500 companies, a pursuit aimed to ensure no one felt invisible within these colossal organizations.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, a Democrat representing most of Baltimore City, said the funding would help free up officers to put more “boots on the ground” in neighborhoods, which would rebuild community trust and curb crime.
“If we do not make crime our number one priority, every day, every night and in every way, the peril will take place and we will see ourselves treading water,” Mfume said.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. Kweisi Mfume, and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced a new $2 million investment Monday in West Baltimore's historic Pennsylvania Avenue Market.
The leaders said the investment is important because Pennsylvania Avenue Market is one of the few sources of fresh food for the surrounding neighborhoods of Madison Park, Penn North and Upton.

Pennsylvania Avenue Market will be rejuvenated, thanks to a $2 million federal investment announced today by U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume, and Mayor Brandon Scott. The funds are part of the FY2022 omnibus funding legislation enacted last month. Officials hope to provide greater access to healthy foods for the community, add jobs, and support local entrepreneurs. Sen. Hollen and Congressman Mfume fought to deliver the funds as part of the FY022 omnibus funding legislation.
